This past July, President Barack Obama signed a bill passed by Congress to extend authorization for Federal Aviation Administration programs and funding until September 30, 2017.
In addition to extending FAA authorization, the measure includes provisions that impact operations of unmanned aircraft systems, as it directs the FAA to create a comprehensive UAS research and development road, which the AUVSI has advocated to coordinate industry and government research and development programs. Additionally, according to AUVSI, in outlines a pilot program for unmanned traffic management and expands the Section 333 exemption process to allow for beyond-line-of-sight operations.
"This FAA extension will provide short-term stability for the commercial UAS industry," said Brian Wynne, president and CEO of AUVSI. "Its provisions will help expand commercial operations, advance research and keep the airspace safe for all users – manned and unmanned."
AUVSI holds 2016 Startup Connection
On July 18, the AUVSI hosted its first Startup Connection, which was held in San Francisco and focused on highlighting innovations in unmanned systems and robotics. The event brought together investors, channel partners, and OEMs with startups, new ideas, and new technologies in an interactive format combining demonstrations and presentations
Amazon and UK government to explore drone delivery safety
A partnership between Amazon and the UK government is set to explore the steps needed to make the Amazon Prime delivery drone become operational a reality by enabling Amazon to trial new methods of testing its delivery systems.
Amazon invests birdhouse-style drone stations
Additionally, Amazon has received a patent for docking stations for streetlight posts, cellphone towers, and buildings so that delivery drones can recharge and download information about impending weather, according to Silicon Beat, the tech blog of The Mercury News.
These stations are intended to allow for package delivery at a point in time when UAVs generally lack the ability to travel long distances when carrying heavy goods.
"The range provided by current UAV technology . . . makes deliveries over a wide area – e.g. throughout a city, or even a portion of a city – difficult," Amazon’s patent documents said.
Google also testing delivery drones
Looking to keep pace with Amazon, Google has announced that it has received permission to begin testing delivery drones in the United States.
Alphabet, the parent company of Google, received permission from the FAA to test drones weighing less than 25kg in designated areas as part of the company’s Project Wing. The announcement, according to The Telegraph, came alongside a number of measures intended to encourage the drone industry introduced by the White House

LE BOURGET, France — With the sudden bang of a gavel Saturday night, representatives of 195 nations reached a landmark accord that will, for the first time, commit nearly every country to lowering planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions to help stave off the most drastic effects of climate change.
The deal, which was met with an eruption of cheers and ovations from thousands of delegates gathered from around the world, represents a historic breakthrough on an issue that has foiled decades of international efforts to address climate change.
Traditionally, such pacts have required developed economies like the United States to take action to lower greenhouse gas emissions, but they have exempted developing countries like China and India from such obligations.
The accord, which United Nations diplomats have been working toward for nine years, changes that dynamic by requiring action in some form from every country, rich or poor.
“This is truly a historic moment,” the United Nations secretary general, Ban Ki-moon, said in an interview. “For the first time, we have a truly universal agreement on climate change, one of the most crucial problems on earth.”
President Obama, who regards tackling climate change as a central element of his legacy, spoke of the deal in a televised address from the White House. “This agreement sends a powerful signal that the world is fully committed to a low-carbon future,” he said. “We’ve shown that the world has both the will and the ability to take on this challenge.”
Scientists and leaders said the talks here represented the world’s last, best hope of striking a deal that would begin to avert the most devastating effects of a warming planet.

When serial Oscar nominee Leonardo DiCaprio finally broke his Academy Award drought last week he inadvertently triggered a small surge in sales of spinning tops. The reason, explains Will Cutler, a product designer from Burton upon Trent, is somewhat complicated.
Movie buffs will remember that DiCaprio’s character in the 2010 science-fiction film Inception was a thief who infiltrated the subconscious of his victims. In a world where dreams and real life are difficult to distinguish, Dominic Cobb relied on a small top – his totem – to check if he was awake (the spinning top slows and topples) or dreaming (it spins for ever).
So, when DiCaprio picked up his Best Actor Oscar for The Revenant, the internet celebrated with a meme showing the actor using his top to check if he was dreaming or if he had actually got his hands on a gold statue. And that, according to Mr Cutler, the designer of the Vorso MK1 top, was enough to cause “an upturn in business”.
“I’m serious man,” said the 26-year-old designer. “I’m worried we won’t have enough stock.”
In truth, the curious renaissance of the spinning top was under way before DiCaprio won his first Oscar. A cursory search of crowdfunding sites such as Kickstarter and Indiegogo – places where the latest tech gadgets tend to dominate – reveals a plethora of tops, a rudimentary toy that has existed since antiquity.
Today’s tops tend to be small, metal objects with hyperbolic names. They include the TTi-180, the UltraTop XXX, the BilletSpin, the Kraken and the ForeverSpin, a product that reportedly raised $1.5m (£1m) on Kickstarter. Some of the new generation of tops glow in the dark, others can be stacked like building blocks; most promise extravagant spin times. A few boast more metaphysical qualities: the UltraTop, for example, is billed as “a great way to relax, escape from the hustle and bustle and meditate”.

On Wednesday, 9 September 2015,a Hungarian camerawomen was fired Tuesday for deliberately tripping a Syrian refugee, the local news channel N1TV, where she worked, said in a statement.
Petra Lazlo, who is a member of the anti-immigration group and a worker for N1TV station, was caught on camera sticking her leg out as a father carrying his son runs past, causing them both to fall down on the ground at the Roszke immigrant camp on the Hungary-Serbia border during a police crackdown on immigrants.
She was also caught on camera kicking refugees fleeing the camp, including a young girl.
The N1TV colleagues today behaved unacceptably in Roszke collection point. Our working relationship with the camerawoman has ended. The case was considered closed our part,” The Telegraph newspaper quoted the news station as saying in a statement.
Lazlo’s video was widely shared on social media after it was posted by German reporter Stephan Richter on Twitter.
The migrants were part of a group of 1,500 people who had been waiting for hours at a refugee collection point near the Roszke crossing.

The attacks in Paris on the night of Friday 13 November by gunmen and suicide bombers hit a concert hall, a major stadium, restaurants and bars, almost simultaneously - and left 130 people dead and hundreds wounded. They were described by President Francois Hollande as an "act of war" organised by the Islamic State (IS) militant group.
The first of three explosions occurred outside the Stade de France stadium on the northern fringe of Paris where France were playing Germany in an international football friendly. Suicide bomber blew himself at a fast-food outlet near the stadium at 21:53. The attackers all wore identical explosive vests.
Meanwhile, other attacks were unfolding nearer to the centre of town, around popular nightlife spots. The first took place at about 21:25 in the 10th district (arrondissement), not far from the Place de la Republique.
The gunmen arrived at the scene in a black Seat car, later found abandoned, about three miles (nearly 5km) away in the eastern suburb of Montreuil.
Witnesses at Le Carillon bar, 18 rue Alibert, said they initially thought a firecracker had gone off before realising that they were under fire from semi-automatic rifles.
"People dropped to the ground. We put a table over our heads to protect us," said Ben Grant, who was with his wife at the back of the bar.

Ms Yousafzai,Malala who was 15 at the time, was shot in the head on board her school bus in the Swat valley in 2012, in an attack that shocked the world.
She was awarded last year's Nobel Peace Prize for campaigning for children's rights, despite the risk to her life.
Officials say the 10 men, who do not include the man named as chief suspect, belonged to the Pakistani Taliban.
Ataullah Khan, a 23-year-old militant, was identified by a police report at the time of the shooting - but he did not appear in the list of 10 men convicted on Thursday.
It may be one of Pakistan's most high profile court cases - but there is little information about it and the sourcing is shaky. Someone leaked the court ruling to a television channel, surprising journalists in Swat.
A press officer for the military first promised a statement giving details of the case, then backed out. Local lawyers declined to offer comments, and judicial officers feigned ignorance about when or where the trial had been held.
There was a similar lack of detail last September when the army first announced it had arrested the 10 men who have now been convicted.
Pakistani officials believe local Taliban leader Mullah Fazlullah ordered the attack. He is thought to be in Afghanistan.
Ms Yousafzai, now 17, was treated for her injuries in the UK and currently lives in Birmingham with her family. They are unable to return to Pakistan because of Taliban death threats..
